This Orange County, NY, motorcycle manufacturer had the great fortune of being the focus of the popular reality TV Show "American Chopper." It debuted in 2002 and the tough biker image of its stars -- and OCC owners -- complimented perfectly their mechanical and engineering prowess. It debuted in 2002 and the tough biker image of its stars -- and OCC owners -- complimented perfectly their mechanical and engineering prowess. It made Orange County Choppers custom motorcycles a household brand that melded artistry and mechanics on the air.

The company has its roots in the Teutul family's steel manufacturing business which was started in the 1970s by Paul Teutul, Sr., the patriarch with the Harley tattoo and mighty mustache. As an adjunct to the steel business, he and his son Paul, Jr., (Paulie) started building custom bikes. In 1999, OCC was launched as an enterprise and its first bike, True Blue, premiered at the Daytona Biketoberfest. There's no doubt much of the attraction to the chopper series is the interaction of the family members, but in the meantime, people who never sat on a motorcycle or got their hands greasy from an engine, are getting painlessly educated about building fine motorcycles.

One of OCC's hallmark machines was built by Paulie to commemorate the firefighters who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks. The Fire Bike became a particularly profound piece of work as it integrated an actual steel rivet from the Twin Towers into the gas tank of the bike.

The Teutuls were honored by the United States Air Force who commissioned them to build a $150,000 bike to be used in their recruiting and outreach efforts. It is replete with impressive Air Force symbols, a riveted gas tank and rear view mirrors shaped like jets. It's named the Raptor and modeled after the F-22 jet of the same name.

The models built on the show all run but aren't really built for riding (although they are for sale). The lowest priced model starts at about $40,000 but one model topped a cool $1 million to build. Of course, the die cast models of OCC bikes are far more affordable.

OCC makes its name with a robust business in producing custom and themed bikes for individuals. There is the Liberty Bike, the New York Jets Bike, Comanche Bike, Christmas Bike and a long list of fanciful bikes that, like diamonds and snowflakes, are precious and one-of-a kind. ...less
