In 1937 the company that would eventually become Volkswagen was founded in what is today Wolfsburg, Germany. It was initially used to start the production and design work of Ferdinand Porsche, but both the man and the factory were derailed by the Nazi cause of WWII.
Weapons and military equipment were manufactured at the plant that was populated mostly with prisoners of war who provided coerced labor. Although Volkswagen transcended this dark part of its history, in 1998 the company established a fund to reach out to more than 2,000 people forced to labor in its plant and provided them with a measure of monetary reparation and formal apologies.
